江戸文学の傑作、鶴屋南北の「東海道四谷怪談」を加藤泰監督が映画化。毒を盛られて顔が醜く変形し、斬殺されたお岩。夫であった伊右衛門と金貨しの娘・お梅との祝言の夜から、彼女は亡霊となって伊右衛門に付きまとう。腐敗と退廃、色欲と物欲の葛藤に明け暮れる元禄の世。殺したはずのお岩が血みどろの顔で蘇る。画面のすみずみまで冴え渡る、きめの細かい演出がみごと。
